Threading: A Traditional Hair Removal Technique

Threading is a traditional hair removal method that uses a twisted thread to remove hair directly from the follicle. Known for its precision and control, it is most commonly used for eyebrows and facial hair. With practice and proper technique, threading can also be performed safely and effectively at home.

1. Thread Preparation

Thread Selection
Use a thin, strong thread—preferably cotton or polyester—for better grip and durability.

Thread Length
Cut a piece of thread approximately 18–24 inches long.

Twisting the Thread

  • Tie both ends of the thread together to form a loop.

  • Twist the loop 6–8 times to create a tight central twisted section, which will be used to trap and remove hair.

2. Threading Application

Holding the Thread

  • Place your thumbs and index fingers inside each end of the loop.

  • Position the twisted section in the center.

Positioning

  • Place the twisted portion gently over the area with unwanted hair.

Movement Technique

  • Use a controlled seesaw motion: open one hand while closing the other.

  • This motion rolls the twisted section across the skin, trapping and pulling out hairs from the root.

Direction of Movement

  • Always move the thread against the direction of hair growth to ensure clean removal and reduce the risk of ingrown hairs.

3. Techniques and Practical Tips

  • Practice First: Begin on less sensitive areas such as the arm or leg to develop coordination and control.

  • Skin Preparation: Cleanse the skin thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry before threading.

  • Maintain Tension: Keep steady tension in the thread to prevent slipping or breakage.

  • Aftercare: Apply aloe vera gel, rose water, or a gentle moisturizer to calm the skin and minimize redness.

4. Types of Threading

  • Eyebrow Threading: Ideal for shaping and defining eyebrows with sharp precision.

  • Facial Threading: Effective for small areas such as the upper lip, chin, cheeks, and sideburns.

  • Full-Face Threading: Removes fine facial hair, leaving the skin smooth and evenly textured.

5. Advantages of Threading

High Precision: Allows for clean lines and well-defined shapes
Gentle Exfoliation: Removes fine hair along with dead skin cells
Reduced Ingrown Hairs: Lower risk compared to waxing or shaving
Chemical-Free: Safe for sensitive and reactive skin types
Longer-Lasting Results: Hair regrowth is slower and finer over time
