Hot Stone Abhyangam

Hot Stone Abhyangam is a deeply penetrating, full-body Ayurvedic therapy that beautifully blends ancient Indian healing with global traditions. Developed by therapists at the world-renowned Soukya International Holistic Health Center near Bangalore, this luxurious treatment combines the benefits of medicated herbal oils from Ayurveda with the soothing warmth of hot stones, a practice inspired by Native American and Tibetan healing systems.

This 90-minute session is a journey into total relaxation and rejuvenation.

Therapy Experience

Small warm stones placed between the toes begin the experience with indulgent delight, while larger stones are used in long, sweeping strokes for massage. These smooth, heated stones generate a comforting warmth, creating a cocoon of security and calm. Simultaneously, Ayurvedic oils work deeply to detoxify and nourish, selected specifically for the individual's dosha (body constitution) or health condition.

The therapy integrates both feel-good indulgence and therapeutic benefit. The warmth of the stones enhances the absorption of the herbal oils, while the masseuse’s firm strokes stimulate circulation and assist in eliminating toxins from the deeper tissues.

Technique and Flow

This treatment typically involves two therapists:

  • One focuses on heating and managing the stones.

  • The other alternates between traditional oil massage, stone massage with oil, and placing hot stones on key energy points across the body.

A rhythm is established—while one part of the body is being massaged, another area benefits from the penetrating heat of a strategically placed stone. As stones cool, they are replaced to maintain consistent warmth.

After the back, legs, and arms are treated, the client is turned over and invited to lie on eight warm stones aligned along the spine. The result: heat flows upward from the stones below and downward from those placed on the front—intensifying the therapeutic effect.

Stone Properties

The stones used are typically basalt—a black volcanic rock rich in iron, known for its exceptional heat retention. These stones are believed to enhance energy flow and promote physical and emotional balance.

Holistic Bliss

Accompanied by gentle, ambient music and guided by practiced hands, the experience becomes meditative. The body relaxes, the mind quiets, and the spirit finds peace. As the treatment concludes, clients often wish it would last longer—but the benefits remain, lingering in the body and soul.

When administered regularly—especially as part of a long-term wellness regimen—the effects of Hot Stone Abhyangam are significantly amplified, contributing to profound healing and sustained vitality.
